Yes. You can receive a Reiki attunement more than once, and people do so for several different reasons: repeating a level after a break, training with a new teacher, learning another lineage, or preparing to teach. There is no universal limit on the number of attunements a person may receive.
The more useful question is what you are hoping the repeat will do. A second attunement at the same level is usually described as a refinement or refresher, not as a new rank. A repeat at a different level or in a different lineage is a different matter. And repeating an attunement does not automatically make you more skilled, more authoritative, or more entitled to teach.
The main reasons people repeat an attunement
| Reason | Usually appropriate? | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Refreshing the same level after a long break | Yes, if you want the structure | Whether the teacher treats it as a review or a new class |
| Learning from a different lineage | Yes, with clear expectations | What the new lineage teaches differently and what it recognises |
| Repeating before teacher training | Often | Whether the teacher requires it or simply offers it |
| Collecting attunements as a sign of status | Not by itself | Your motivation and what you can actually practise |
| Replacing an attunement you believe has expired | Depends on your school | What "expired" means in that tradition |
The article on whether attunement expires covers the last row. Here, the focus is on repeats you choose deliberately.
Repeating the same level
A repeat at the same level can be a gentle way back into practice. You may have taken Level 1 years ago and forgotten the hand positions, or you may want to sit in a class again with more experience. Many teachers welcome returners and may charge less or allow you to join for part of the day.
What a repeat usually offers:
- a structured review of the material;
- a chance to ask questions you did not know how to ask the first time;
- another attunement, if the teacher offers one;
- contact with other students;
- a renewed commitment to practice.
What it usually does not offer:
- a new level or title;
- permission to teach;
- a guarantee that you will feel more energy;
- recognition by other schools.
If a teacher tells you that repeating Level 1 will "upgrade" you to a higher rank, ask what they mean. That is not a standard use of the term.
Training in a different lineage
Reiki has many lineages and styles. A student may begin in one Western Usui line, then study with a Japanese-derived teacher who uses Reiju, then take a Karuna or Angelic Reiki class. Each may have its own attunement, symbols, and vocabulary.
This can be enriching, but it needs honesty. A new lineage may recognise your previous training informally while still requiring you to complete its own foundation. It may also use the same words differently. Ask:
- Does this school require me to start at its first level?
- Will it recognise my previous attunement?
- Are the symbols or rituals different?
- What title, if any, will I hold in this lineage?
- How should I describe my combined training to others?
Do not assume that one school's Level 2 is equivalent to another's. The label is not a universal standard.
What a repeat does not do
A repeat attunement does not erase your previous training, and it does not automatically replace it. It also does not create a universal rank. Reiki has no single worldwide hierarchy that recognises a certain number of attunements as a qualification.
This is worth saying because some marketing presents repeated attunements as levels in a ladder: third degree, fifth degree, ninth degree, and so on. Those systems exist, and they can be meaningful within their own schools, but they are not a universal ladder that all Reiki traditions recognise. The article on the Grandmaster title explains how that particular label developed and why it is contested.
Receiving a repeat well
If you decide to repeat an attunement:
- Choose the teacher, not just the ritual. Ask what the class includes and how it differs from your previous training.
- Be clear about your goal. A refresher, a new lineage, and teacher preparation are different requests.
- Tell the teacher what you have already done. Good teachers adjust their explanations and do not waste your time.
- Do not compare sensations. Feeling more or less than last time is not a reliable measure of value.
- Keep practising afterwards. The attunement is not a substitute for the practice that follows.
Consent and boundaries
Attunements involve proximity, touch, breath, or guided visualisation, depending on the tradition. You are entitled to know what will happen and to decline any part of it. A teacher should offer alternatives, such as hovering hands instead of touch, and should stop if you are uncomfortable.
This is true for repeats as much as for first attunements. Experience does not oblige you to accept a format you do not want.
What a repeat is for
A repeat is best chosen for a specific purpose: refreshment, a new lineage, or teacher preparation. Decide which one you are doing before you book, and ask the teacher to confirm that the class matches it. If the only reason is that another certificate looks more senior, wait until you can name a practical benefit.
