Prepare your space and give informed consent

Plan comfort, access, touch preferences, and a clear way to pause.

Prepare for comfort and understanding

Start with the kind of ceremony being offered. Ask which level, which teaching tradition, how long to allow, what touch is included, and whether the facilitator uses breath, scent, music, or prayer. Ask how you can pause or stop. These questions help you consent to the actual experience rather than to an unfamiliar label.

The manual’s preparation chapter begins on page 28. It recommends a comfortable chair, space for the facilitator to move, and an explanation before the ceremony. Preserve those useful practical elements. Adapt older preferences such as fragrance, incense, removal of glasses, or raising the hands to your needs. A scent-free space, supported arms, retained glasses, open eyes, or a noncontact arrangement can be discussed in advance.

Choose a position you can sustain. If you are seated, support your feet and back as useful; your hands need not stay raised when that causes discomfort. If you use a mobility aid, keep it accessible. Tell the facilitator the practical adjustment you need without feeling obliged to disclose your full health history.

Keep consent specific and ongoing

Suppose you agreed to hand contact but feel uncomfortable when a facilitator approaches your face. You may pause and ask what comes next, or decide not to continue. Agreeing to a ceremony does not remove that choice. A respectful facilitator can respond without suggesting that your boundary blocks a spiritual result.

Before the day, write a small checklist: time and location, contact arrangements, comfortable clothing, access needs, agreed touch preferences, and follow-up questions. Keep food, fluids, and prescribed care consistent with your ordinary needs and professional advice. The manual’s energetic explanations for preparation are beliefs, not a reason to skip medication or impose a restrictive regimen.
