Guide a short practice with permission

Offer a simple practice invitation, respond to preferences, and close without interpretation.

Offer an invitation with a real choice

You can practise explaining a familiar quiet exercise without presenting yourself as a teacher or offering an attunement. Choose an adult friend who is interested and agree a brief activity: perhaps two minutes of comfortable sitting followed by optional self-hand positions. Explain that this is an opportunity for you to practise giving clear directions, with no required sensation or result.

Ask permission before beginning. One possible invitation is: “Would you like to try a short quiet practice? You can keep your eyes open, change position, or stop whenever you want. I will guide with words and will not touch you.” If they decline, thank them and leave it there. Consent is useful only when no is an acceptable answer.

Describe what will happen before asking them to follow it. “We will sit comfortably, notice the chair, rest our hands, and finish by looking around the room.” Avoid leading with a complicated spiritual explanation. They can decide whether to join a clear activity; they cannot meaningfully consent to a mystery you promise to explain afterward.

Useful feedback concerns clarity, choice, and comfort as well as your own intention.

A short sequence to rehearse

  1. Begin. Invite a comfortable position, with eyes open or closed. Allow a few moments for adjustment. Ask them to let breathing remain ordinary.
  2. Give one direction. Invite them to notice the support beneath them or rest their hands where comfortable. Wait long enough for them to respond instead of filling every silence.
  3. Offer a choice. They may bring their own palms together briefly, or leave the hands resting. Do not move their hands for them.
  4. Close. Invite them to notice the room and move when ready. Ask whether the directions were clear and whether anything would have improved comfort.

If they become restless, shorten the practice or finish. If they ask for an explanation you cannot support, say so. For example, “I can explain how this course uses the position, but I cannot tell you that it changes a chakra.” You can be helpful without interpreting an unseen process.

Afterward, write one strength and one adjustment. Perhaps your opening was clear but you spoke too quickly, or you remembered to offer open eyes but forgot to explain the ending. Review the communication rather than grading the other person’s spiritual response. Teaching a full course involves further preparation; this exercise develops one small skill that is also useful in ordinary shared practice.
