How Reiki Came To The West

It was discussed in this article how and when Reiki was found, as well as how it has developed as a healing system both in the Western world and in Japan, and where it began.

How Reiki Came To The West

Until the early 1990s, information about the discovery of Reiki was passed down orally from teacher to student in a very traditional manner in the West, where it has been practiced and taught since the late 1930s. This item stated that Dr. Mikao Usui, a Christian seminary professor, was a renowned scholar. Asked if he had faith in the Bible accounts of Jesus's healing and if he did, when would they learn how to heal, one of his students challenged him.

One of his students told him that after recognizing he couldn't teach his students any healing procedures, he spent the remainder of his life researching what Jesus and the Buddha had done. Among his many accomplishments, he is claimed to have traveled extensively and studied a variety of languages, including Japanese and Sanskrit Sutras (sacred texts). A Zen Buddhist abbot urged him to meditate in order to uncover the answers he was looking for, and so he did.

Dr. Usui allegedly saw a bright light while fasting for 21 days. His studies led him to sacred symbols, which he understood and achieved spiritual empowerment (spiritual empowerment involves transferring wisdom, insight, and capacity through an outpouring of spiritual energy) and enlightenment. He could run down the mountain after a long fast, but he hurt his foot in his haste. When he bent down to hold his toe, he was entirely healed. He later treated a young girl's toothache and cured his friend - Abbot's arthritis.

A naval officer named Dr. Chujiro Hayashi (1879-1940) was the one who imparted his wisdom after spending many years mending people in Japan. Hayashi is claimed to have founded a Reiki clinic after the death of Dr. Usui. One day in 1935, Hawayo Takata (1900-1980), a young woman from Hawaii on a family visit to Japan, arrived at the clinic with terrible sickness. Her therapy had been so successful that she requested Hayashi to teach her Reiki, and he eventually did so.

In exchange for the opportunity to learn the first and second levels of this treatment method, Takata lived with his family and worked in their clinic for no compensation. For the first time since returning to Hawaii in 1937, Hayashi and his family visited her at her Reiki clinic. To ensure that she would be able to pass on this healing technique, he taught her the final degree of Reiki in 1938, before he returned to Japan. During World War II, all of Hayashi's Reiki students in Japan were slain, and Mrs. Takata was the only Reiki teacher left.

Hawayo Takata

Mrs. Takata soon found herself traveling across the US and Canada, giving Reiki treatments and teaching others how to use it. She taught Reiki at two levels, the First and Second Degrees. It was the third and final level of teachings that she began giving out in the 1970s to ensure that the tradition would continue after her death. It is because to these 22 Masters that Reiki has become so widely distributed throughout the Western world:

  • George Araki
  • Dorothy Baba
  • Ursula Baylow
  • Rick Bockner
  • Patricia Bowling
  • Barbara Brown
  • Fran Brown
  • Phyllis Furumoto
  • Beth Gray
  • John Gray
  • Iris Ishikuro
  • Harru Kuboi
  • Ethel Lombardi
  • Barbara McCullough
  • Mary McFadyen
  • Paul Mitchell
  • Bethel Phaigh
  • Shinobu Saito
  • Virginia Samdahl
  • Wanja Twan
  • Barbara Weber Ray
  • Kay Yamashita

Mrs. Takata's system of teaching Reiki has lasted despite various adjustments by other Masters over the last two decades, which will be explored in the coming chapters. She partitioned the system into three parts, as Hayashi had instructed. She taught First and Second Degree as one- or two-day courses to better accommodate Western pupils. Master-level training typically takes a year with Takata.

Through an initiation ceremony she learned from Hayashi, Mrs. Takata gifted her students with her healing talents. She also taught the Reiki symbols. These sacred forms can be utilized to change the way Reiki is used and to increase its strength. Students were encouraged to practice Reiki every day, using a set of 12 basic hand positions held for five minutes each. To compensate for this, she charged steep course fees: $150 for Reiki 1, $500 for Reiki 2, and $10,000 for Reiki 3. In the early 1970s, when Takata began instructing Reiki Masters, a house in America cost $10,000.

Chanting And Toning With Karuna Reiki

The Karuna Reiki experience taught me that toning or chanting during a Karuna Reiki session causes profound shifts in the healing energy's vibrational frequency. The Mahayana Buddhist tradition of the bodhisattva Avalokitesvhara, who creates the Sound that Illuminates the World, validates this notion.

The Ethics Of Distant Reiki Healing

The Second Degree procedures teach you how to transmit powerful healing to anybody, anywhere, at any time, including the past and future. Using the Distant (Connection) Symbol helps you to construct a bridge between you and the person (or animal) you wish to heal.

Guided Meditation To Help Heal The Shadow Self Can Change Your Life

The shadow self refers to the aspects of ourselves that have been repressed into the unconscious — the aspects of ourselves that we are insecure about, ashamed of, or frustrated with. The shadow self-concept is based on the idea that we metaphorically bury those aspects of our personalities that we fear will not be accepted, accepted, or loved by others; thus, we keep them in the shadows.

Integrative And Functional Medicine —Personalized Care For The 21st Century

The goal of integrative and functional medicine is to get to the root cause of health problems and treat the whole person with a combination of approaches—optimizing health for those who have it and restoring health for those who have lost it. Integrative medicine and functional medicine are often used interchangeably, but the terms are actually referring to two different approaches to patient care.

The Karuna Reiki Attunements

A common belief is that compassionate action is captured in this non-traditional form of Reiki. When used in conjunction with Usui Reiki, it has a powerful effect on its own, but even more so.

Possible Side Effects Of A Karuna Reiki Attunement

Becoming a Reiki practitioner with the ability to heal oneself and others is a beautiful path that allows you to make a difference in the world. While it is exciting to receive an attunement in order to increase your frequency and connection to the universal life force energy, these attunements come at a cost.

The Traditional Karuna Reiki Attunements

Karuna is typically only taught to Usui Reiki Master practitioners. There are four levels of Karuna instruction. There are four levels of mastery in this system: two for practitioners and two for masters.

Original Karuna Attunements - The Sai Baba Reiki Attunements

For those wishing to view the original Sai Baba attunement process in order to compare it to later attunements, these are included for informational purposes only. You will notice a resemblance between these and the attunements developed later.
