Archangel Metatron and Angelic Reiki: Lineage, History and Limits

How Angelic Reiki uses Archangel Metatron, what the lineage claims, and what the historical Metatron of Jewish tradition does and does not establish.

In Angelic Reiki, Archangel Metatron is the central angelic figure. The system's official history says its founders, Kevin and Christine Core, worked under the guidance of Metatron and the Ascended Master Djwhal Khul. Its workshop literature says Metatron activates the Reiki symbols to their angelic vibration, and that the Level 1 and 2 attunement includes a connection to the Angelic Kingdom of Light at the eleventh dimension through Metatron and the angelic collective known as the Mighty Sarim.

These are the lineage's claims. This article separates them from the historical study of Metatron in Jewish literature: what the name means in older traditions, how Angelic Reiki uses it, and where the limits of the evidence lie.

Metatron in Jewish Tradition

Metatron is an angelic figure in Jewish literature. The name does not appear in the Torah or the Hebrew Bible. It appears in the Talmud in a small number of passages and is developed much more fully in later mystical texts, especially the Hekhalot and Merkabah literature.

The Jewish Encyclopedia summarises the older material this way: Metatron is "the name of an angel found only in Jewish literature," described as a heavenly scribe, a prince of the presence, and the angel who bears the divine name. In some traditions he is identified with Enoch, who was taken up to heaven; in others he is a primordial angel. The encyclopedia notes that the identification with Enoch is found in the Targum and in later mystical works, and that the name's etymology is uncertain, with one common suggestion being the Latin metator, a guide or measurer (Jewish Encyclopedia).

The Talmudic passages are memorable. In Hagigah 15a, the sage Elisha ben Abuyah sees Metatron seated in heaven and concludes that there may be "two powers" in heaven; the rabbis explain that Metatron was permitted to sit because he serves as a scribe, and the story is used to police the boundary between angel and God. In Sanhedrin 38b and Avodah Zarah 3b, Metatron appears in discussions of divine authority and the heavenly court.

Later texts such as 3 Enoch expand the figure dramatically. Metatron is described as the transformed Enoch, enthroned beside God, bearing the name "the lesser YHWH," and serving as the guide and scribe of the heavenly palaces. Scholars disagree about how unified this picture is and about the relationship between the Enoch traditions and other strands. The figure is important in Jewish mysticism, but there is no single, universally accepted doctrine of Metatron across Judaism.

Is Metatron an Archangel?

"Archangel" is a title used in some Jewish, Christian and Islamic traditions, but it is not a fixed rank that all traditions apply to Metatron. In Jewish mystical texts, Metatron is often described as the highest of the angels or as a prince of the presence, and some sources call him an archangel. In other branches of tradition, the title is not used, or it is applied differently.

The Encyclopaedia Britannica's general article on angels notes that the English word "angel" comes from the Greek angelos, a messenger, and that angels are defined primarily by their function as intermediaries rather than by a single essence or hierarchy (Britannica). "Archangel Metatron" is a meaningful title within a particular devotional and esoteric vocabulary rather than a scientific classification.

For Angelic Reiki, the title is part of the system's own cosmology. The official literature speaks of Archangel Metatron as a real spiritual being who guided the founders and who continues to oversee the attunements.

How Metatron Entered Angelic Reiki

The founders' official account is specific. Christine Core's history describes Kevin Core's years of reading in Hindu, Buddhist, Western esoteric, Theosophical and magical traditions, and his guidance by Djwhal Khul. It says that during the period when the system was being formed, Kevin was led to a copy of Gustav Davidson's A Dictionary of Angels in a Bradford library, and that this provided material for an attunement connecting the Reiki symbols to their angelic vibration and archetypal form.

The official introduction says the system was created through guidance from the Master Djwhal Khul and Archangel Metatron. The Angelic Reiki Association, a separate organisation, says it was channelled by Archangel Metatron through Kevin Core. The two organisations disagree about authority and lineage, but they agree on the central attribution: Metatron is the archangel most closely associated with the system's origin.

The historical Metatron of Jewish mysticism is a figure in texts; the Angelic Reiki Metatron is a figure in a modern channeled cosmology. The two are related by name and by a shared angelic vocabulary, but the system's claims about Metatron's role in its own founding are not derived from, or verified by, the older texts.

What Is Attributed to Metatron in Angelic Reiki?

In the official workshop descriptions, Metatron is associated with several specific functions:

  • Activating the Reiki symbols. The Level 1 and 2 workshop says the seven symbols are activated to angelic level through the seven levels of form and divine form by Archangel Metatron.
  • Overseeing the angelic attunement. The same workshop includes an attunement to the Angelic Kingdom of Light at the eleventh dimension through Archangel Metatron and the Mighty Sarim.
  • The Master levels. The 3 and 4 workshop includes further Metatronic activations, an Angelic Ray Attunement and a Masters Archangelic Initiation.
  • The Metatron Methods. A separate workshop explores the gift of Archangel Metatron, including sacred geometry, the Platonic solids, the spiritual hierarchy of the Angelic Kingdom and a Merkabah attunement.

These are ritual and theological claims. They describe what participants are told is happening, not what an outside observer could measure. The workshops also include ordinary elements—teaching, practice exchanges, group discussion and rest—which are part of the experience regardless of one's metaphysical views.

The Metatron Methods Workshop

The Metatron Methods workshop is presented as a newer body of work for people who want to understand the principles behind Angelic Reiki. Its published content includes:

  • Opening and clearing a workshop space.
  • A Michael karma-cutting meditation.
  • Etheric body healing and spherical healing.
  • A method for cleansing all the chakras.
  • The role of the healer in death and dying.
  • The four elements and the changes associated with "ascension."
  • Sacred geometry and the Platonic solids.
  • The spiritual hierarchy of the Angelic Kingdom.
  • Detailed guidance on archangels and Ascended Masters.
  • A Merkabah attunement and an Ascension Activation Crystal Layout.

The workshop is not required for the core Angelic Reiki levels, and it is not a licence to teach the core system. It is an additional specialist course for people who want to go deeper into the system's cosmology. The association offers it over two days; the founders' organisation offers related material through its own workshops and products.

What the Claims Do and Do Not Establish

The Metatron attribution does several things within Angelic Reiki:

  • It gives the system a cosmic authority story.
  • It links the Reiki symbols to an angelic origin.
  • It provides a narrative for why the attunements are said to come from the Angels rather than from a human lineage.
  • It connects the system to a wider esoteric culture of angels, Ascended Masters and sacred geometry.

It does not establish that Metatron actually appeared to Kevin Core, that the symbols were activated by an angel, or that the system's cosmology is historically true. Those are matters of faith. Nor does the older Jewish literature establish the Angelic Reiki narrative: it provides a historical context for the name, not a validation of a twentieth- or twenty-first-century channeled system.

A respectful position is to treat the lineage's account as a living tradition rather than an established historical fact. That is compatible with genuine spiritual practice and with intellectual honesty.

Other Metatron Currents

Angelic Reiki is not the only modern system that attributes material to Metatron. New Age and esoteric literature contains many Metatron-themed teachings, channeled texts, attunements and energy systems. Some use the name loosely; others have detailed cosmologies of their own. There is no single authority that governs all of them, and they do not necessarily agree with one another.

This matters for research. A website that says "Metatron teaches..." may be drawing on Jewish mysticism, a modern channeled text, a particular energy system or a personal vision. The name alone does not tell you which. If you are comparing systems, ask for the specific lineage, teacher and texts behind the claim.

Evaluating a Metatron-Centred Teaching

If you are considering a workshop or session that centres on Metatron, a few questions are useful:

  • Which tradition is this? Is it Angelic Reiki, another named system, a Jewish mystical study, or a personal synthesis?
  • Who trained the teacher? What organisation, if any, recognises them?
  • What exactly is claimed? Is Metatron presented as a symbolic focus, a devotional figure, a channeled source or a promised agent of results?
  • What is the evidence? Is the teacher honest that the claims are spiritual rather than scientific?
  • What are the ethics? Do they respect consent, avoid medical claims and encourage ordinary care?
  • What is the cost and commitment? Is there pressure to buy more, or to accept a hierarchy of hidden knowledge?

A teacher who can answer these questions calmly is more trustworthy than one who trades on mystery or urgency.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Metatron an archangel in the Bible?

Metatron does not appear in the Bible. The name is found in Jewish literature, especially the Talmud and later mystical texts. "Archangel" is a title used in some traditions, but it is not a universally fixed rank.

Did Metatron found Angelic Reiki?

Angelic Reiki's official account says the system was created through guidance from Archangel Metatron and Master Djwhal Khul, with Kevin and Christine Core as the founders.

Why is Metatron associated with the Reiki symbols?

The official teaching says Metatron activates the Reiki symbols to their angelic vibration and oversees the attunement to the Angelic Kingdom.

Is Angelic Reiki the same as Metatron healing?

No. "Metatron healing" is not one standardized practice. Angelic Reiki is a specific system with its own founders and workshops. Other Metatron-themed practices may have different lineages, methods and claims.

Can I work with Metatron without Angelic Reiki?

People pray, meditate and create art with Metatron in many traditions, including Jewish mystical study and modern devotional practice. Angelic Reiki offers one structured route, but it is not the only way the name is used, and it does not own the figure.

Is the historical Metatron the same as the Angelic Reiki Metatron?

They share a name and a family of angelic imagery, but they belong to different contexts. The historical figure is studied in Jewish texts; the Angelic Reiki figure is part of a modern channeled cosmology. It is more accurate to see continuity and reinterpretation than simple identity.

Where to Go Next

Read Angelic Reiki for the system overview, Angelic Reiki Attunement for the ritual, and Angelic Reiki Levels for the workshops. Angelic Reiki vs Usui Reiki compares the lineage with the older Reiki family, and Angel Healing vs Reiki distinguishes the wider category. The angels hub collects the related material, while Reiki Angels is a separate historical archive.

Metatron is a rich and contested figure. Angelic Reiki gives him a central place in a modern spiritual system, and the tradition's own voice can be heard alongside the historical and symbolic questions.
